The Stingers were finally rewarded for their hard work, as they overwhelmed the East Gwillimbury Talons 5-0 this past Thursday night. After a prolonged wait for the referee to arrive, and some jittery moments to start the game, the girls slowly began to dominate the match and could have won by an even larger margin.
Darcy opened the scoring; wisely following in to slot home a rebound after the Talon goalkeeper was unable to hold on to the original shot. Samantha, using her customary dogged determination, followed with the first of her two goals on the night (celebrating in photo above) as the Stingers held a 2-0 lead at halftime. Sabrina G. (fear of being accused of nepotism prevents this writer from describing the goal), Samantha’s second and Sabrina B.’s successful penalty rounded out the scoring.
While the goals were abundant, special mention should also be meted out to the defensive back line – Hillary, Daniela, Saffara, Simone, Rachel and Sabrina B. – who did their usual great job of keeping the opposition’s scoring opportunities to a minimum.
The girls hope to maintain this momentum when they travel to North York to take on the powerful Toronto Eagles on June 26th at Esther Shiner Stadium.
