Stingers Impress at Newmarket Tournament
The Stingers put aside their recent disappointing performance in the League Cup, reaching the final of the Heart of York Tournament. The girls lost the championship game 2-0 to the Newmarket Team A.
Unlike the Can Am Tournament, the Stingers went undefeated in the preliminary round to finish tied for first overall (placed 2nd on goal difference). An intense semi-final victory against S.C. Italia put the girls into the final.
The addition of goalkeeper Cristina (which allowed Hillary to demonstrate her dazzling skills as an out player), plus the play of the usual stalwart backline saw the girls not concede a goal in the first four games. No mean feat when one considers the constantly changing playing conditions that often left both the players and supporters soaked to the bone.
The Stingers will now shift their focus back to league play as they enter the home stretch of their schedule. First up are the tough Toronto Eagles who will be seeking retribution for an earlier loss to the Stingers. Game time is 6:30 at St. Andrews #3.
