The Stingers put forth their gutsiest performance of the season in defeating the Pickering Gators 2-1 this past Thursday in the penultimate league game. The result gives the team the inside track in finishing third in the L4 1A Division, yet will leave them just short of promotion.
The game versus Pickering was a very physical one as both teams saw too many instances when the trainer had to be called onto the field. Aurora opened the scoring when Caroline followed up on her own rebound to fire the Stingers in front. There were no further goals in the first half as Stingers goalkeeper Cristina made a series of impressive saves to keep the Gators off the score sheet. The second half differed little from the first as both teams realizing the importance of the game refused to give their opponents any appreciable room to operate. The Gators were made to rue their decision to employ an “offside trap” on a free kick near midfield. Katie delayed her run long enough to stay onside and proceeded to chip the Pickering goalkeeper to give the Stingers a 2-0 lead. The Gators did make the end result a little closer with a goal in the dying minutes but the Stingers held out, to dash any hope Pickering had of gaining promotion, and avenged three earlier losses. Victory is sweet. The girls will finish the league season on September 10th against East Gwillimbury, followed by their participation in the Richmond Hill Tournament on the weekend.
