Richmond Hill Tournament

Richmond Hill Tournament

The Stingers concluded the 2008 season with their entry into the Richmond Hill Tournament this past weekend.  This was easily the toughest field the girls had to face this year in tournament action.

The opening match saw the girls take on the Richmond Hill Raiders 96 team.  While their opponents may have been slightly smaller in stature, they seem to have a little more desire and won more than their share of the 50/50 balls. The Raiders took the lead early in the second half and held on to that advantage winning 1-0.

The next day the girls took on the RH Raiders 95 team (the eventual champions), and a good night’s rest did wonders for the Stingers.  The girls, for the most part, played to their true potential and were rewarded for their determination when Caroline slotted home a shot from a difficult angle.  The Raiders did eventually tie the score with less than 10 minutes remaining in the match.  The Stingers were unlucky not to snatch victory when a wayward shot was cleared off the Raider goal line in the dying moments.

The last game was to be of no consequence to the girls as unfortunately they had already been mathematically eliminated from further contention.  However the game was against the Scarborough Fury, an L3 team, and would serve to measure the supposed differential in the level of play.  Well, there really wasn’t any discernable difference.  The Fury, somewhat more physically imposing, took advantage of one of their infrequent openings to net the only goal of the game.

The final whistle meant the end of a long season.  Promotion disappointment still permeated the air, and the new year will probably mean some turnover in team personnel as is the norm for any rep team.

Tryouts for the 2009 team begin on September 20th at Sheppard’s Bush from 5:30 – 7:30.
