Stingers Lose Tournament Final via Penalty Shoot-out
The Stingers began the long and arduous road towards the onset of the 2009 outdoor season by participating in the South Simcoe United Holiday Klassic Indoor Soccer Tournament on January 2nd.
The team showed very little signs of any Christmas rust, advancing to the tournament final without conceding a single goal (game results listed below). Unfortunately the Stingers lost the final on penalty kicks to a very aggressive Dixie team.
After thoroughly dominating the preliminary round to finish first overall, the team appeared somewhat tired in the semi-final defeating a plucky Clairlea Westview 1-0 on a late goal scored by Caroline.
On to the final against Dixie – a hard fought and rather intense game. While the Dixie team may have had more of the possession, the Stingers’ defense kept their opposition at bay, allowing few if any quality chances at goal. The game finished 0-0. The dreaded penalty shoot-out ensued. The Stingers started well, scoring on their first two attempts but eventually went out, losing 3-2.
Congratulations girls. Special thanks to Michelle for joining the team on such short notice and contributing greatly to the team’s success.
