The Stingers bounced back from last week’s loss (and somewhat passive performance) defeating the Barrie Spirit 2-1. The result solidified the Stingers’ hold on second place in the AISL.
The Stingers started the game cautiously, attempting to adhere to Coach Louis’s edict concerning possession and “off the ball” movement. The message was received by some, but others still reverted to the comfortable way out – pound the ball downfield.
Barrie took advantage of the resultant lack of cohesion by notching the opening goal midway through the first half. Being down a goal seemed to rouse the Stingers’ fighting spirit. They spent the rest of the half on the offensive and were rewarded for their efforts when Samantha chipped a long shot over the Spirit goalkeeper. The strike marked the first goal by a non-defender in this AISL season.
The girls’ next game is against a familiar foe - the Bradford Eagles – on Saturday.
