The Stingers continued their penchant for winning the one goal battles as they defeated the Bradford Eagles 1-0 on Saturday. The Eagles have been in the same division as the Stingers for the past two outdoor seasons. The games between the two teams have for the most part been very competitive and this match was no exception. The victory was the Stingers fourth in five games – all by one goal - and strengthened their hold on second place in the AISL.
The undermanned Stingers (with a couple of reinforcements from the U13 team) continued their preseason pledge to concentrate more on ball control than wins and the results are slowly becoming evident, if not totally on a consistent basis. However, the challenge for possession - “50 / 50 balls” - remains a work in progress.
The only goal of the match was scored in the dying moments of the game. Samantha converted the rebound of Hillary’s well hit free kick past the Eagle goalkeeper (see photo above and actual footage in Video Gallery – Aurora Goals). Alexis collected her third shutout of the AISL season.
The girls’ next game is against the older Newmarket 94B team which will test the girls’ mettle.
