The Stingers renewed their heated rivalry with the Toronto Eagles …. oops, Vaughan Eagles last night in Woodbridge. The intensely fought match ended 1-1. Both teams had their chances to win the game, but a little bad luck and some great goalkeeping meant each side would have to be content with the one point apiece.
The Eagles came out strong from the start, dominating the opening twenty minutes. An early cross from the right side found an unmarked Vaughan forward, whose shot managed to trickle across the goal line despite a valiant effort by Alexis in goal. The Eagles almost doubled their advantage a few minutes later but the speculative effort caromed off the crossbar and was cleared away. The Stingers had weathered the storm and slowly began to work their way back into the game. Just before half time the Stingers evened the contest. Meredith’s piercing pass from the far wing was latched upon by a streaking Natalie who calmly took one touch before placing the ball past the charging Vaughan goalkeeper.
There was to be no further scoring but plenty of opportunities and no shortage of heart-wrenching moments in the second half. The somewhat borderline marking employed by the Eagles did not deter the girls, and Vaughan’s frustration soon became evident as they committed foul after foul. The most damaging indiscretion occurred in the dying moments of the game. An Eagles defender, caught out of position was forced to foul the onrushing Stingers’ striker. The referee showed no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot. The resultant shot, as well as the rebound was saved by the Vaughan keeper. Game over – points shared.
The girls don’t have much time to recuperate as they face another tough encounter on Thursday, June 11th against the Wexford Fury. Kick-off is at 9:00 p.m. at L’Amoreaux Park.
