After a tense few weeks of team tryouts, and the subsequent hand-wringing over player selections, the Stingers stepped onto the field for the first time as a revamped unit.
ANB Academy provided the opposition for the initial game on a surprisingly temperate Sunday afternoon. The match was relatively even – possession wise – but the Stingers combined a stingy defence with opportune finishing to run out 2-0 victors.
The first half was scoreless, and somewhat lifeless. Both teams had their difficulties dealing with a field surface made slick by a mid-morning rain shower. The Stingers had to deal with the added burden of a lack of familiarity, and coming to terms with each other’s tendencies.
The half-time sermon was short and light-hearted – relax and have fun.
The girls took the message to heart. The communication and energy levels rose steadily as the game progressed. Following a few close calls around the ANB goal, the Stingers finally broke through. Brittney pounced on a loose ball to fire the Stingers into the lead midway through the second half. It was a fitting reward for all her hard work to that point. Brittney added to her auspicious debut with a second marker a few minutes later to seal the victory.
The final whistle not only signalled the end of the game but also the start of a brief respite for the girls. Preparation for the indoor season (AISL) will begin towards the end of November to allow the players (not to mention the parents) a little breather.
In other news, the Stingers have confirmed their intentions towards an England Tour during March Break 2010. The next few weeks will be spent finalizing travel arrangements.
