The Stingers remained undefeated in the AISL as they squeaked out a 2-1 victory over the Lake Simcoe Storm U14 team. The girls struggled to initially find their rhythm, but definitely showed signs of improvement as the game wore on.
Lake Simcoe started off well forcing a spectacular save from Alexis in the opening minutes (highlight clip in the Video Gallery section). The Storm continued to use the Stingers over exuberance to catch them offside on numerous occasions. That strategy persisted until Mackenzie outwitted the Storm defensive line by taking the ball on her own side of the centre line and outracing the opposition before calmly placing a shot beyond the goalkeeper (highlight clip in the Video Gallery section) . The first half ended with the Stingers up a goal.
The Stingers began the second half much more upbeat and looked to put the game away. Chance after chance went begging as the girls just could not seem to find the net, and were made to rue their missed opportunities as the Storm caught a break midway through the half. An inadvertent hand ball outside the Aurora penalty area led to a direct free kick which the Storm converted to tie the match. The game looked like it would end in a draw until Christiana tenaciously fought off her marker and potted the winning goal (highlight clip in the Video Gallery section).
The girls will face the Aurora Stingers 1994 T3 on Saturday at 6:00 pm.
